JKLU Design Entrance Test (DET) is a national level exam held to test the design aptitude of candidates seeking admission in UG and PG programmes of the Institute of Design. In order to qualify for admission to B.Des./ M.Des., the candidates must choose a round of their convenience and choice to appear in the Design Entrance Test (JKLU-DET) as per the schedule below.
Exam Pattern for JKLU-DET 2023
The details of the exam pattern are as follows:
- The written exam will have a total of 100 marks.
- Candidates will be given 90 minutes to complete the exam.
- The entrance exam will have two sections:
a) MCQs where the candidates will be evaluated for logical reasoning, general knowledge, and visual sensibilities.
b) subjective questions where the candidates will be evaluated on the basis of their creative abilities. - After clearing the written exam, the shortlisted candidates will be required to appear for Portfolio Round and Personal Interview.
- At the time of personal interview, the shortlisted candidates will be required to present their portfolio as well.

Shortlisted candidates who clear the entrance exam and meet all the eligibility criteria will be required to upload their Portfolio on or before the last date of submission and appear for an interview round with the faculty. The dates for the interview will be notified individually.
Portfolio Guidelines for the candidates
Candidates are asked to submit 10 pieces of their original creative works, that should reflect their motivation and support their application. These can be submitted as collage, sketches, drawings, photographs, videos, 3D models, food presentations or any other skills.

- Minimum 60% aggregate marks in both Class X & XII or equivalent grades.
- Candidates should have passed classes 10th and 12th from a recognised Central/ State Board/ University in India or in any foreign country recognised as equivalent to 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
- For those who appeared in Class XII exam in 2023, only XII marks in the applicable subjects will be considered for eligibility..
- The applicants are required to appear for JKLU-DET as their entrance exam for qualifying for admissions in JKLU.
- Foreign Nationals/ Persons of Indian Origin/ Non-Resident Indian candidates can be considered for admission on the basis of their marks in 10+2 or equivalent examination only.

- University reserves the right to increase academic fee by a maximum of 10% annually.
- Transport fees is ₹ 45,000 per year.
- The above-mentioned fee as applicable to citizens of India and SAARC Countries.
- Hostel charges are on annual basis.
- Hostel charges for one academic year and the students are not allowed to leave the hostel during the semester.
- Hostel fee, as above, is applicable to all boarding students.
- Hostel rooms are on twin sharing basis. Hostel Charges are subject to yearly revision.
- Hostel security deposit of ₹5,000 would be payable along with first year’s fees. It is refundable at the time of leaving the Hostel.
Refund policy: Refunds for the fee deposited for registration will be as per the following guidelines:

Scholarships for B.Des Programme offered at Institute of Design
To encourage and support meritorious Applicants, JKLU has a very distinctive scholarship programme. Applicant may qualify for a scholarship up to full waiver of the University Academic Fee.
Scholarship is awarded based on
- Academic Performance in Class X and XII marks.
- Performance in JKLU-DET & Portfolio Round.
Scholarship on the basis of Academic Performance in Class X and XII marks, JKLU DET and Portfolio :
Students who have secured a position in the top 15% in R1 and R2 top 10% In R3 in JKLU-DET rounds will receive scholarships varying from 75% - 100% fee waiver. Additionally, students with exceptional portfolios will be awarded relevant scholarships.

Additionally, we have a scheme of fee reduction for certain categories of students. We reduce fee by 25% (of academic fee) for the following people:
- Wards of any staff member of JKLU or any entity belonging to JKO
- Sibling of any student (both get fee reduction)
- Sibling of any alumni
- Any alumni doing a second degree.

- Minimum 60% marks or equivalent CGPA in a three-year Bachelor’s Degree (10+2+3) or equivalent in any discipline from a recognised University.
- Students appearing in the final examination of Bachelor’s Degree can also apply.
